Many times when a customer brings there computer because of data loss they haven’t keep track of there software license’s. What if your hard drive crashes today? It could be years before you need to reload the software and it’s necessary to have the software license key as part of the install / setup steps. You may be forced to re-purchase the software even if you still have the CD or DVD. Every software purchase you get a license for proof of ownership and it’s this license that you’re paying the big bucks for. Most companies (i.e. Microsoft, DELL) don’t keep these records for you. Always keep the card, CD / DVD sleeve or email that contains the license. Most people wouldn’t loose a $100 bill if it were in the house. Software (i.e. Windows, Office etc.) may have cost that much or more as part of your computer purchase. Make copies of the license key, and protect the label on your computer to protect your investment in software. You’ll be glad you did if, you sell the computer, or have it repaired, you may need it some day.

Windows 7, Mac, iPad or Android Tablet computer?

If you get a tablet or iPad they are intended to operate independently with WiFi or 3G/4G, there is little need to transfer programs or documents from your other computers. Tablets and iPads share files, music and pictures thru cloud Apps and Services from your other computers. Windows and Mac computers you usually want to transfer files, documents, pictures, music and videos to the new computer because your usually replacing them with the upgrade. I recommend that my customers schedule an appointment to bring the “New and Old Computer” to the shop for this. You can be limited trying to do it from home and can run into many unforeseen complications trying to do this yourself.
In-Shop transfer Advantages are:
-Fast Internet connection to do any updates or downloads
-Lower hourly In-Shop Rates $60/hr. (usually only 1 – 1 1/2 hr. charge, only the time I have to spend on going to next step, your not charged for time waiting for downloads, updates, scans or file transfers) Big savings.
-Pick-up “New Computer” and go over it to make sure all is done to customers satisfaction.
Please call me at 585-225-4640 if you would like to schedule a time to get the job done right

Most common laptop repair call.
The power connector is venerable to breaking from the leverage the plug applies to the small port. If your not extremely careful of this connector it can break inside the case.

The power connector is venerable to breaking from the leverage the plug applies to the small port. Most laptop manufacturers have the power receptacle soldered directly to the motherboard. With stress on the connector it can damage the main board. It may be possible to re-solder the connections to the pads on the main board if it didn’t damage the board. These are miniature contacts that take magnification to see and work on. The case needs to be completely removed and most times the main board removed to get at both sides of the port to de-solder and replace with a new port, “Best to leave a professional”. Without a way to power the laptop it is useless. For a reasonable repair cost, a shop could get it up and working again. If it’s repairable, it will be much less than replacing the computer, programs, and data. If the connection can’t be repaired it may mean replacing the motherboard. A more costly repair but it may be worth it still. You may be able to get the data off the hard drive and transfer it to a new computer if you are just ready to retire the machine. Call us to diagnose it, to see if it can be repaired.

If you face the error “select boot device” or related message when starting your computer. You could be facing a “Data Recovery” disaster. If your Hard Drive stops spinning then most file recovery options are not available. There’s the off chance that if you send the drive into a Data Recovery house that they may be able to get the drive running again but the retrieval of files from the platters is very costly. Most customers can’t justify the price, $100-$200 diag +$ per each file recovered, and chalk it up to lessons learned. This takes time sending the drive in and waiting until your drive is looked at, customer aproving the cost, then waiting to get the drive back.

Don’t assume just because the computer can’t find the boot drive that the drive stopped spinning. That’s the worst case scenario. The computer and drive may be fine and should be checked by a professional before that determination is made. Before you bring the computer in to get it checked remove all USB flash drives and external hard drives and check that there isn’t a CD-ROM or floppy disk in the drive causing the boot failure.

Make sure you do regular backup’s of your important files, music, pictures and videos. It could be your last chance. You never know when your boot drive may stop spinning, it can’t be predicted. Need help backing up your data or verifying your backup can be restored. Call and we can help.

Many Customers have their own wireless (WiFi) router, NetGear, Linksys, or DLink etc. The Telephone or Cable Company only provides the Internet connection, DSL or Cable modem in many cases and not the WiFi router. The Router gets its connection to the Internet from the Modem and SHARES (Router= Routes) it with many computers (4-Wired, 256 WiFi). If the Modem isn’t giving out an Internet signal the Router can’t pass it on to the computers to share. In that case, it’s necessary to reset the Modem to get connected to the servers at the Telephone Company. It is necessary to reset the Router also so it can reboot and get it’s signal from the Modem.
Because the devices have electronic circuits like computers do, sometimes the programs in them get mixed up. A reset starts them over or reboots the circuits in them to get all the switching in them doing their jobs.

Laptops and laptop batteries have become very popular for most households. The common mistake most customers make is to leave the laptop plugged in to the power. Unlike a desktop PC laptop was made to be used on its battery. If the laptop is plugged in all the time, the battery never gets a chance to discharge.

The laptop should be unplugged at least once a week or so to use it on its battery, through a full discharge. Then the laptop can get plugged in to recharge.

This helps the battery by having the electrons go through a state of change. Instead of the constant state of charge, from leaving a plugged in all the time. Laptop batteries can be around $100 to replace. Good battery maintenance can get batteries to last approximately three years, before having to be replaced. So use the laptop as it was intended and the battery should give you many years of use.

With the computer repair services now being offered all over the place by the large chains you might be wondering what’s the difference between a small local repair company that has been around for a while, and a large chain’s repair shop. Let me share some of my thoughts.

At AveryPC, you walk into my office and I greet you at the door. This is the way it should be when you bring your computer in for repair. You should expect to have your Computer Technician take care of your computer. It holds your personal files and personal information. When servicing your computer generally it’s for repairing the software so you need a Computer Technician more than you need a mechanic. There are times you want or need an upgrade so your Tech should also be experienced at installing parts and upgrading.

The traditional Computer Repair Shop is set up like an Automotive Dealership. Let’s face it, the model works for selling and servicing cars.
But: Why would you want a “Computer Store” setup like an Auto Dealership repair your PC?
Do you know the name of the guy who worked on your computer? Did they tell you can “call me any time” you have a question or problem. Did they tell you “My goal is to keep your car out of the shop”?

At AveryPC that is what I do say to my customers. I call it service as part of the sale. I want to hear from my customers, and to call me if they need help. I’m your Computer Technician and I need to be available for you when you need help. I forward my calls to my cell phone to be available to my customers. I would help you solve a problem over the phone if you just need advice on what to do and it is something you can do on your own. If I’m servicing your business I will work around your schedule to keep from disrupting your customers and business. When it comes to keeping your business running I recommend what you need to do to be cost effective and within reason for your businesses. I try to keep Computer Repair expenses reasonable to help you stay in business so you can grow. These are the benefits of becoming a customer of AveryPC

Your car needs servicing and they usually change parts. So the dealership model serves this repair need best. Oh yes they have a vast selection of NEW cars to encourage you to consider, if your car or truck is to expensive to repair. Or entice you with the newest gadgets or new sexy model. And sooner or later they hope to turn a car repair into a car sale.

Your computer needs to be serviced for it’s life, and the goal at AveryPC is to help you get the longest life out of it. That can be 3 to 5yrs. And sometimes longer depending on the customers needs. Some business customers can have software valued at thousands of dollars, and worth much more than the PC.

“If you are getting your computer repaired take it to your Computer Technician. If you are going to get a new computer go to a store.”

At AveryPC we specialize in Computer Repair. I have chosen a Professional Office for a reason- ease of access the location provides, inviting office environment, low overhead to keep Computer Repair costs down. This is where you would expect to deal with a Professional in the Computer Repair business, where you can get one-on-one support and advice on your computer needs. I will recommend where to purchase your next computer for your needs. Or I will build a custom PC made unique for your Living Room or other location with custom install for the unique features of Media Computers, connected to your HDTV.

You’ll be glad you chose AveryPC and you have your own Computer Tech to help you in this rapidly changing digital information world.

Your system kept “freezing” or “hanging up” on you

You started hearing unusual sounds from the hard-drive – high-pitched, loud clicking or grinding noises

Your computer kept re-booting on its own

Well, the good thing – you’ve noticed those signs – and hopefully, took some precautions.

What to do if your drive has any of those symptoms:

1) First, and most important thing to do before it is too late is to BACK UP YOUR FILES. At the first signs. Grab CDs, DVDs, or any devises that have storage room and backup your most important files.

2) Create a boot disk and run Windows Scandisk and set it to automatically fix errors. If it finds more than a few bad sectors then see the point above

3) If possible download and use a hard drive diagnostic program. All the major hard drive manufacturers have free utilities on their websites. Repair what you can and see point 1.

4) Schedule an appointment with a Computer Repair Shop. Don’t wait for a disaster. Call

1. Has your computer slowed down noticeably from when it was new? It is probably infected!

2. Do you have the NEWest Antivirus protection on it? If you can’t answer that question or aren’t sure.

3. You need to have it checked by a Computer Repair Tech that specializes on Virus and Malware Removal.

Virus’s and the like are a unfortunate reality of the Internet today. There is the constant threat that your computer will get infected from using it connected to the Internet. There are Armies of programmer’s all over the world creating the newest Virus’s, Trojans, and Malware. All to infect our computers. The ONLY way to slow this threat is

to have the most current up-to-date Antivirus program . The threat goes up exponentially each year. Which forces the Software Companies that create the programs to protect our computers, to redesign the programs. Every day the programmer’s creating the problem programs, are coming up with NEW ways to get by the Antivirus programs. That’s there goal! The Antivirus companies are always trying to stop the NEW threats.

The thing we all have to be concerned about because of this fact, is there may be programs running on our computer that are watching everything we do from our computer. That’s the largest threat today, Malware. The new Antivirus programs have protection built in to try to detect those programs from running on our PC’s. A few years ago this wasn’t even programed into the Antivirus programs. Why do you need to be concerned? Identity theft, capturing personal info and using it for their benefit. Once it’s captured from you it can be used to log in to your accounts. Banking, Instant Messaging, Email, Address Books, ect. They can do what ever they want and pretend they are you on the Internet.

Always check to see if your Antivirus program is the newest version and that it’s staying up-to-date with daily updates. If your computer is slowing down and not acting right it’s time to have it checked for programs that have snuck by your protection. It usually means there are processes and programs running in the background you don’t know are there. Every year the threats change and keep evolving. Take it to a professional that focuses on Virus and Spyware, and Malware cleanup.

Have you ever had that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realized your critical data was lost – or you couldn’t access it when you needed it?

You never thought you’d need data recovery services…until you discovered that you deleted that important file by mistake. Or your computer crashed and you couldn’t get Windows to start…

That’s when knowing where to call for help comes in handy.

Write down this number along with your other Life-Saving numbers -

585-225-4640 – Avery PC Repairs, 888 Long Pond Road. Ste.#2, Rochester, NY 14626

Then, when something bad happens and you can’t access your data, don’t panic. Just give us a call. Do that before you send your drive to expensive data retrieval companies that charge upfront fees.

See, the good news is that most of the time the files aren’t actually gone – and we know how to them.

Usually we can start working on your drive right away so that you could get it back fast and your files available to you again.

At the very least, you’ll get an honest evaluation of your options.
